Travertine kitchen floors have not been used until recently in kitchen flooring type of applications it has been around for a long time. Used extensively during the Roman age travertine can be found in many ancient building but only recently has it made the transition to kitchen flooring material. Travertine is made when limestone in condensed under extreme amounts of pressures travertine is in the same family as limestone and marble which is considered one of the most sought after materials today. Marble is made when already formed travertine is subjected to even higher amounts of pressure then what it took to make travertine.
Available in four styles of finishes: polished, honed, brushed, and tumbled types travertine has a few options but not as many as some other flooring material. The polished finish has a high gloss shine while if you are looking for a matte finished then honed is what you are looking for. Brushed and the tumbled types of travertine have more of a textured look to them. If you want to add an extra layer of protection you need to make sure you seal the travertine flooring but this is not as absolute as some of the other types of flooring choices you have today.
Travertine is a relatively simple flooring material to install but does require a good experience in do-it-yourself projects. If you are having your travertine shipped to you it is best to choose the smaller tile and go for a higher hardness rating, 4 is ideal, to avoid having your new travertine broken before you even get it.

-If not sealed it can absorb grease and other spills
-Polished travertine can be slippery
If you are looking to buy travertine kitchen flooring you can do so for about $3-25 dollars per square foot for materials plus the cost of installation if you do not do it as a do-it-yourself project. If you want the look of stone but can't afford the price that comes with some of the other types of stone travertine flooring would be a great pick for you.
